Dropbox plans US$350 million Tigris Data deal and unveils AI infrastructure service
The new DBX Agent Cloud service supports storage across cloud providers, with additional content-processing and filesystem capabilities planned.

Dropbox plans to spend US$350 million to acquire Tigris Data, a startup focused on cloud storage for AI workloads. Announced alongside the deal, its new DBX Agent Cloud service targets businesses and developers creating AI applications and agents.
Dropbox has not given an expected closing date. The company said acquiring Tigris would speed its expansion into AI infrastructure. Established by former Uber engineers, Tigris enables developers to keep and access data with multiple cloud providers rather than rely on just one.
DBX Agent Cloud initially offers standalone object storage compatible with Amazon S3 tools. Dropbox intends to follow that with content processing to turn documents, images, audio and video into AI-usable formats. Planned filesystem capabilities would provide agents with persistent storage for managing files between tasks.
Alongside the infrastructure announcement, Dropbox is introducing agent-based functions in its main product. The company said a natural-language request can prompt Dropbox to identify relevant files and propose a plan, with supported actions performed after user approval.
Supported tasks range from folder summaries and document-version comparisons to file drafting, PDF and image editing, recording transcription and video trimming. Users can also request folder organization and file moves or renaming. Existing sharing permissions apply, changes are logged and supported operations can be reversed.
Customers can change AI models during a session or use ChatGPT, Claude and Muse to work with Dropbox files without uploading them again. Finished work returns to Dropbox.
Dropbox said more than 70,000 teams have received the new features. Access initially covers eligible Standard and Advanced teams in Australia, the UK and the US, in English only. Wider availability is planned for 2027.
