The change lets Mac users view formatted .md files without opening another app, replacing previews that showed raw Markdown syntax.

Apple has added Markdown rendering to Quick Look in the first beta of macOS 27.3. The preview feature now displays formatting in .md files instead of showing the underlying syntax, letting users see the results without launching a separate application.

The update also brings additional Siri AI capabilities and developer tools. Safari additions include Vertical Tabs as well as Adaptive Dark Mode.

The Quick Look change follows other Markdown support across Apple's platforms, including importing and exporting files through Notes. Apple's new Siri AI app skills feature uses SKILL.md files, too. As Federico Viticci noted on X, developers can use these Markdown-based files to give Siri instructions for carrying out complex tasks in their apps.

Created by John Gruber in 2004, Markdown uses simple text characters to mark elements such as headings, lists, links and bold text. Its uses include documentation, online publishing and files that supply AI agents with instructions and context.
