WhatsApp is introducing an AI tool that extends photos beyond their existing edges to a limited group of iOS users, according to WABetaInfo. Access is concentrated among people testing the app through TestFlight, although some users of the public iOS app also have the feature.

The option appears among the AI effects in WhatsApp’s drawing editor after a user selects a photo in a chat. WABetaInfo said Meta AI examines the picture and produces an expanded version within a few seconds. The result then appears in the editor, where the user can decide whether to send it.

The tool also works with status updates. Users who dislike the generated image can undo the change, restore their original photo and run the expansion again for a different result, WABetaInfo reported.

Access has also reached users of WhatsApp’s Android beta. There is no confirmed timetable for wider availability.
