Android automatically links phone numbers to accounts on a device
Google's documentation says the default verification setting also covers accounts added later and replacement SIM numbers.

Google automatically verifies SIM phone numbers during Android setup and associates them with all Google accounts on the device, including secondary and work accounts, according to its support documentation. A September 8, 2025 Google Play services changelog lists verification as an automatic setup process.
Android Authority found that Google revised its documentation between August and October 2025 to describe verification as enabled by default. Some users have learned about the linking through unsolicited emails confirming that their numbers were verified.
The policy extends beyond the accounts and SIMs present at setup. Google's support page says accounts added afterward receive the phone's numbers, while a replacement SIM's number is linked to the accounts already signed in. Google and carriers periodically repeat verification, which may result in carrier charges.
Google says verified numbers support functions including account recovery, RCS messaging and finding lost devices. Verification also activates Better sharing on Google for one signed-in account. Its help pages separately describe a setting that uses phone numbers to personalize advertising across Google services, but Google has not specified which advertising setting governs automatically attached numbers.
Automatic verification can be disabled only through the phone, and doing so does not remove numbers already linked to accounts; those require manual removal. Kaspersky says disabling verification prevents quick account recovery using the number and causes Google Messages conversations to fall back from RCS to SMS.
