Google says the feature is intended for a later platform release and will not appear in the upcoming Wear OS 7.1 stable emulator.

Google is previewing a system status bar that would place the time and status indicators above apps on Wear OS watches. Developers can test the feature through a canary emulator made available in Android Studio on October 26, ahead of its planned inclusion in a later platform release.

Positioned at the top of a watch’s circular screen, the bar will give apps a consistent clock appearance and placement, Google said. Apps needing the entire display will be able to hide it. The preview currently substitutes a star for the eventual system status indicators.

Compatible apps using Jetpack Compose for Wear OS can adopt the bar automatically. The system then handles the clock instead of the app. During list scrolling, the bar disappears, with the time returning after about 2 seconds without user activity. Supported full-screen interactive components also hide it while open.

The emulator is labeled Wear OS 7.1 and is based on Android 17. Google said the status bar is available only in this canary emulator for early testing and feedback, rather than in the forthcoming stable emulator for Wear OS 7.1.
