The developers behind Draw Things have launched Local Code, an open-source Mac assistant that runs downloaded AI models on the user's computer. Local operation is free and keeps prompts and files on the Mac instead of transmitting them to a cloud provider.

The app handles the supporting tools needed to run a downloaded model without requiring separate installation. Its functions include producing presentations, images and videos, analyzing spreadsheets, and working with PowerPoint and Word documents. A built-in browser allows the assistant to navigate websites and perform online tasks.

Users can grant access to information in Notes, Mail and Messages, and permit changes to Photos and Calendar. The app's documentation says Apple's App Sandbox limits which files and system resources it can access.

Available models include Qwen and DeepSeek, with options for different Mac memory capacities. The website specifies a 16GB minimum for Qwen 3.8 27B and lists recommended downloads at around 10GB to 21GB. Larger DeepSeek versions need downloads of around 89GB or 376GB.

Choosing a cloud model sends prompts and relevant files to that provider. Optional cloud use requires users' own API keys or prepaid credits, which start at $9.99. The launch follows a public beta that started September 12. Direct downloads are available; the developers say a Mac App Store version is coming soon.
