Google has acknowledged a problem involving unusually large background downloads on some Google Home Speakers. In a statement to 9to5Google, the company said it was already rolling out a fix that should resolve the issue for users.

The acknowledgment follows several reports of speakers apparently downloading data continuously from Google servers. 9to5Google reported that one of its speakers used 17 GB over 24 hours despite receiving no voice commands or being used to stream media during that period.

That device recorded a 9.99 GB download at 3 a.m. PT. It also downloaded 41 GB on October 13, with downloads totaling 132 GB over 30 days. The cause remains unclear; 9to5Google suggested unsuccessful firmware downloads as a possibility.

The extent of the problem is unknown. Another lightly used Home Speaker in a separate household downloaded only 2 GB over a month, 9to5Google said. The outlet had not observed the same behavior on other Google Home or Nest devices, including several Nest Hubs sharing the affected speaker's household.
