Four Gemini 4 Argon agents defeated the Ender Dragon in Minecraft without human intervention, according to a paper by Google researchers. The agents coordinated their activities, shared warnings and recovered teammates’ lost items during a session lasting 27.23 hours.

Researchers placed the agents in a randomized survival world within a sandbox, giving them the objective but no predetermined roles, strategies or specialized game tools. Each operated a player through Mineflayer, an open-source library. They communicated using the game’s chat system and a shared memory.

The agents divided responsibilities themselves: janesick produced tools, gyldenia collected food and supplies, auratian activated a key portal, and bulicame constructed Enderman shelters and delivered the finishing blow. Researchers said most of the session was spent on the Ender Dragon. The team recorded 2,783 programs written and executed, 229 messages exchanged and 605 deaths.

A separate fifth agent, named the Observer, watched for cheating and produced live reports and summaries. The session consumed 1.35 billion input tokens, with costs of US$810 at Gemini’s list price or US$1,620 at the standard price. The researchers said that, to their knowledge, this was the first autonomous completion of Minecraft from start to finish using Mineflayer alone, without advance scouting of world seeds or additional game-specific tools created by humans.
