Apple executives Wei Chen and John Zhong are reducing their responsibilities and moving into advisory roles as Victor Yin assumes oversight of much of the company's display development, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Chen and Zhong have each spent approximately 30 years at Apple.

Yin prepared for the transition under the two executives over several years. Gurman reported that their eventual exits are part of a succession plan that has been in progress for years.

The display changes accompany a wider reshaping of engineering leadership. Rajesh Ambati, Louie Sanguinetti and Derek Shaeffer became vice presidents in October. Their responsibilities span connectivity software and hardware; Sanguinetti has worked on wireless hardware for decades.

Apple previously broadened Johny Srouji's responsibilities, naming him chief hardware officer with oversight of hardware engineering and hardware technologies. A later product-development restructuring aimed to better coordinate chip and device design teams.

Gurman also reported layoffs affecting some hardware program managers as Srouji and CEO John Ternus cut management layers. Separately, App Store head Carson Oliver gained a vice president title, and Steve Smith took over corporate development.
