A Valve developer has committed a Linux kernel change to enable CD-ROM support for the Steam Frame after a user requested the capability. The code provides a software foundation rather than a feature users can already access, with testing and an eventual system update still required.

Steam Community user Aiodensghost raised the issue on October 18, saying they wanted to use an external CD drive for movies while traveling and to install older games, particularly 2006's Need for Speed: Carbon. The VR headset could not read the discs or provide sufficient power to the drive. Optical-drive support is disabled in its customized Linux kernel.

Valve developer Gabe Rowe replied the next day. Eight minutes after his forum response, his commit enabling CD-ROM kernel support appeared on GitHub. Before that change reaches users, it must undergo testing, be incorporated into a new system image and be delivered as an update. No timing for that rollout is known.
