Ubiquiti announces 800-meter PoE switch with power and speed limits

The US$274 switch needs special cables and separate endpoints, while maximum-range operation limits device power to 13 watts.

Ubiquiti has announced the USW-LR-Switch-8-PoE (630W), an Ethernet switch that the company says can deliver power over distances reaching 800 meters. The switch is already available for US$274, but extending its range reduces both the power available to connected devices and their data speeds.

The switch has eight long-range ports and requires special cabling plus a compatible endpoint to pass power to equipment such as a camera or another switch. According to Ubiquiti, a connected device can draw no more than 13 watts at 800 meters when using the company's official outdoor cable.

Higher power requirements shorten the usable distance. UniFi's AI PTZ cameras, which require 51 watts, can operate up to 200 meters away. Ubiquiti says compatible endpoints typically negotiate a connection of 100 Mbit/s at distances up to 400 meters in long-range mode; beyond that, speed drops to 10 Mbit/s.

Total switching capacity is 3.6 Gbit/s. A separate uplink connection offers a choice between RJ45 and SFP, supporting speeds up to 1 Gbit/s.

Each UACC-LR-Endpoint costs US$99. A setup covering all eight ports costs US$1,066 before cabling, with no discount for buying multiple endpoints. The 305-meter UACC-Cable-C5e-Outdoor-Pro-305M-W cable costs US$149.
