Uber expands ChatGPT Work access to more than 30,000 employees
The rollout follows a 1,000-person pilot as Uber seeks to curb AI spending. Engineers will continue using OpenAI’s Codex coding tool.

OpenAI said Uber is extending its ChatGPT Work office agent to more than 30,000 employees following a pilot involving 1,000 staff. The expansion comes amid Uber’s efforts to get more value from its spending on artificial intelligence.
Launched by OpenAI in July, ChatGPT Work handles multistep assignments and returns completed work. It links with services including Slack, Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive to help employees create presentations, analyze data and prepare meeting briefs.
The default model will be GPT-6.1 Sol, priced at about a fifth of OpenAI’s top model. Uber’s engineers will continue to use Codex for coding. Praveen Neppalli Naga, Uber’s chief technology officer, said the company wanted employees to have tools to innovate and solve problems.
In August, Neppalli Naga said unrestricted AI spending was coming to an end. Uber had reportedly exhausted its entire 2026 allocation for Anthropic’s Claude Code by April.
Uber also linked layoffs to AI for the first time in July, when it cut 10% of its customer-service team. Uber and OpenAI said they would share information about employees’ use of ChatGPT Work and the results during the rollout.
