Surface Laptop Ultra earns 8 out of 10 for repairability
An iFixit teardown found accessible storage and a screw-mounted battery, but keyboard replacement requires extensive disassembly.

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra received a repairability rating of 8 out of 10 following an iFixit teardown, compared with four points for the M5 MacBook Pro. The assessment found several components easy to replace, alongside more demanding repairs and no option to upgrade RAM.
Access to the interior starts with removing four clip-on feet and the screws underneath, allowing the bottom panel to come off. A single screw holds the M.2 SSD in place for replacement or upgrades. The 92 Wh battery uses screws instead of adhesive and carries a QR code that directs users to repair instructions.
The teardown also found that replacing the stereo speakers, headphone jack and magnetic USB-C connection was straightforward. Other USB-C connections are soldered onto the motherboard. Work on the motherboard, screen or trackpad is more involved, while a keyboard replacement also requires changing the chassis cover and dismantling nearly the whole laptop.
Microsoft made an official repair manual available when the laptop launched. The company also plans to supply genuine replacement parts through retailers, including iFixit’s online store.
