Sony brings back Walkman-era headphone design with USB-C
The MDR-3R includes a microphone and playback controls, but Sony does not recommend using it with a modern Walkman.

Sony has introduced the MDR-3R, a wired headset modeled on the headphones supplied with its first Walkman. The new version replaces the original 3.5mm connector with USB-C and incorporates an inline remote for controlling playback, plus a microphone for calls.
According to Sony, the MDR-3R weighs 38g excluding its cable, making it lighter than any other on-ear headset the company currently offers. Its cable measures 1.2 meters, shorter than the one supplied with the original headphones. The new model also retains the original's 23mm drivers.
The design closely resembles the MDR-3L2, which accompanied the TPS-L2 Walkman when it debuted in Japan in 1979. Sony has also reproduced the earlier packaging and manual, while supplying removable foam earpads in orange and blue.
Compatibility comes with a qualification: Sony says the headphones require USB Audio Class 1.0 support. Despite the design's connection to the company's portable music players, Sony advises against pairing the MDR-3R with a modern Walkman.
