OpenAI sets ChatGPT Classic retirement date and plans Chat-Work merger
The older desktop app will retire on January 30, 2027. OpenAI also plans to replace separate ChatGPT and Codex usage limits with a shared allowance.

OpenAI has notified ChatGPT Classic users that it will discontinue the desktop app on January 30, 2027, while separately preparing a test that combines Chat and Work. A notice inside Classic directs users to download the newer app and says their complete conversation history will transfer.
In an email to users, OpenAI said the combined interface will initially be tested with a small group. It will put conversational tools alongside Work capabilities, allowing users to supply files and plugins, request websites or presentations, and oversee tasks performed on the web. Codex will stay separate within the desktop app.
OpenAI also plans to pool the usage allowance for ChatGPT and Codex. The company said consumption will vary by model and task complexity, but most users should not face more frequent waits for their allowance to reset. It said Unlimited Instant is included in users’ plans and will not consume that allowance.
The newer desktop app brought ChatGPT, Work and Codex together, prompting the previous app’s renaming to ChatGPT Classic. OpenAI subsequently adjusted navigation, adding a Chat-Work toggle and a sidebar for moving between ChatGPT and Codex.
