Home Assistant released an experimental installer on October 23, 2026, that offers a live USB option for installing its smart-home operating system on generic x86-64 computers. Version 0.0.0-alpha.4 remains a pre-release build, with the new installation method described as a proof of concept.

The tool is intended to simplify installation on compatible hardware, including mini PCs and older computers. Existing support for x86-64 machines requires users to prepare bootable media and write an operating system image onto the target drive.

Additions include a full-screen interface, checks of operating system images using signed checksums, clearer identification of drives and stronger warnings before storage is erased. Choosing the wrong destination can still cause permanent data loss; the interface does not remove that risk.

The build also includes accessibility changes and refinements to the interface and installation workflows. Home Assistant has given no date for general availability, and its established installation instructions remain the reference for setting up systems.
