Ford claims about 30% drivetrain efficiency advantage over BYD
The Universal EV platform is due to debut in late 2027 with the Fathom pickup, priced from US$28,350 before delivery charges.

Ford says its forthcoming low-cost electric vehicle platform has a drivetrain about 30% more efficient than BYD’s, allowing it to use smaller, less expensive batteries. CEO Jim Farley made the comparison during Ford’s third-quarter earnings call, InsideEVs reported.
The claim covers the platform’s motors, gearboxes and inverters. Ford did not identify the BYD system used as its benchmark. The company says the efficiency advantage would allow it to meet its driving-range targets with a smaller battery, the most expensive component in an electric vehicle.
Ford’s Universal EV platform is scheduled to arrive in late 2027 in the Fathom, a midsize electric pickup. Its starting price is US$28,350, excluding delivery charges. Ford has not disclosed the pickup’s battery capacity.
Farley said Ford established its targets years earlier by considering what BYD might achieve in Mexico. Separately, chief operating officer Kumar Galhotra said Ford’s European partnership with Geely is showing the company ways to reduce vehicle manufacturing costs and shorten development times.
