Apple plans an October 28 introduction for MacBook Pro laptops featuring OLED touchscreens, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported. The computers would come in 14-inch and 16-inch versions, with an announcement by press release expected before invited guests likely get to try them in Los Angeles.

Gurman wrote in his Power On newsletter that the updated computers would weigh less while largely retaining their current appearance. A Dynamic Island would take the place of the screen’s notch. His previous reporting identified the processors as Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max, which debuted in March.

The OLED-equipped laptops are expected to carry higher prices, with a possible increase of up to US$500 at the starting level. Existing U.S. prices begin at US$2,499 for the 14-inch model and US$2,999 for the 16-inch model with mini-LED screens and those chips.

According to Gurman, macOS Golden Gate would adjust its controls according to earlier interactions with either the touchscreen or trackpad. A tap on a button could open a menu surrounding the finger, and touch-oriented changes would extend to the Dock and Menu Bar.

Gurman said Apple would present touchscreen operation as another option rather than a replacement for the keyboard or trackpad. He also reported that mini-LED versions would continue to be sold for now, with their eventual discontinuation to follow.
