Apple is investigating how to give websites more room on the iPhone Duo’s outer screen, according to Apple’s Jen Simmons. In a WebKit blog post discussing Safari 27.1, Simmons said the company was considering ways for developers to use space currently unavailable beneath the browser’s controls.

Safari positions those controls on the right side of the device’s 5.4-inch outer display, narrowing the area available for web content. Multiple reviews of the iPhone Duo identified the layout as a problem.

Simmons described extending a website’s header background across the display as one potential use of that space. But she said allowing pages to reach beneath the controls through the existing HTML viewport setting, viewport-fit="cover", could obscure important content because many websites do not properly accommodate those areas.

Apple is looking into an approach that could be more reliable and easier for developers to use, Simmons said, inviting their suggestions. The post also discussed how websites respond to the iPhone Duo’s different display sizes and folding positions.
