New York City Family Law Attorney Ethan Steward Explains the Possible Effects of Using Social Media on a Divorce Case

Dec 1, 2022

December 01, 2022 - /PressAdvantage/ - New York City family law attorney Ethan Steward (https://www.newyorkfamilylawgroup.com/blog/will-your-social-media-sink-your-divorce-case/) releases a new article explaining the possible effects of using social media on a divorce case. The lawyer mentions most people are using smartphones and computers nowadays. All these devices are packed with convenient apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Youtube.

According to the New York City family law attorney, “With all these social media applications, your posts, snaps, tweets, and videos may not be as private as you think. That can be very embarrassing especially if they impact the outcome of your legal case leaving aside all the nonlegal reasons to make a post to the world. There are some things you should keep in mind when it comes to your own posts, tweets, and videos while you have an ongoing legal matter.”

The lawyers explain that cases involving custody and visitation, child support, and order of protection all have similar pitfalls in social media. If a person or a divorcing party forgets that their friends and family are not the only people who may see their posts, this can be risky for their case.

Attorney Ethan Steward says that many people including exes, employers, prosecutors, or even trolling strangers may use the posts against an individual through their social media accounts. They may gleefully look at an incriminating post that can cause real damage to the owner of the account. The posts may also be used to show poor parenting skills or judgment in a child custody battle.

In the article, the lawyer adds, “We have seen posts used by an ex to show that the husband who could not afford child support wearing luxury items and on a trip in an exotic location. In another instance, people who deny drug or alcohol use generally would not post themselves wearing a t-shirt with a giant marijuana leaf and a blunt in their mouth. It would be helpful to always set your accounts to private and be mindful of the consequences of everything you post online.”

Lastly, the lawyer emphasizes the importance of having a skilled child support attorney when dealing with a divorce case. A skilled lawyer may be able to help the parents understand their roles and responsibilities in the divorce and help them come to a favorable agreement.
