Certolab Haciendas de Cuautitlan commemorates October 19, the International Day Against Breast Cancer, and plays its role in this global fight by providing patients timely and accurate detection of the disease.
The history of cancer prevalence dates back to the most primitive data of humanity. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans left evidence of observations of tumors and malignant diseases in their medical records and writings. However, in antiquity, the nature of cancer was not fully understood, and it was associated with terms such as "ulcer" or "tumor." The term "cancer" comes from the Latin "cancer," meaning "crab," and was used by ancient Greek physicians, such as Hippocrates, to describe these malignant tumors because of the way some of these cancerous tissue masses looked, similar to the outstretched legs of a crab.
Clearly, the understanding of cancer as a group of diseases developed throughout the history of medicine and scientific research, and it was not until the 19th and 20th centuries that advances in the understanding of this disease began to be significant as pathology techniques were developed and the foundations of modern oncology were established.
Regarding breast cancer specifically, there is evidence of medical records dating back to ancient Egypt (around 1600 BC) that refer to diseases that could correspond to descriptions of breast cancer. However, as the doctors and healers of antiquity generally did not fully understand the nature of diseases, breast cancer could have been misunderstood or misdiagnosed on many occasions.
The 20th century brought the most significant advances in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The introduction of mammography in the 1960s and research in the field of oncology allowed for early detection and more effective treatment options, and at the end of this century, in the 1980s, it was detected that the prevalence of this disease was increasing in several countries around the world, so the fight against breast cancer began to be a concern at a global level and that is how awareness and the importance of early detection began to gain momentum.
In 1985, the President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, proclaimed the first National Breast Cancer Awareness Week, which took place during the last week of October. This marked an important step in raising awareness about breast cancer in the United States. Over time, what began as a week of awareness turned into a global movement. The date was set, by initiative of the WHO, to October 19, thus recognizing globally the World Day of the Fight Against Breast Cancer.
The most iconic symbol of breast cancer, the pink ribbon, originated in the 1990s. It is said that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 1982 by Nancy G. Brinker in honor of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died of this disease and focuses on the fight against breast cancer, was the first to use and display it.
Breast cancer is curable if detected and treated in time. Early detection is crucial for increasing the chances of survival. Mammography and breast self-examination are key tools for early detection. On this day, women are encouraged to undergo screening tests at health centers in their communities or resort to health service providers with quality and reliability such as Certolab Medical Laboratory Haciendas, and to know their own bodies to detect possible changes in their breasts.
In summary, the World Day of the Fight Against Breast Cancer is a day dedicated to raising awareness about this disease, promoting prevention, early detection, support for patients, and fundraising for research. It is a global effort to combat breast cancer and improve the quality of life for those who suffer from it. Certolab encourages its clients to join them in this global battle.
