SEATTLE — Prior to his death on Monday, billionaire Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen invested large sums in technology ventures, research projects and philanthropy, some of it eclectic and highly speculative. What happens to those commitments now? Outside of bland assurances from his investment company, no one seems quite sure. Allen died in Seattle from complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, according to his company Vulcan Inc. He was 65. He never married and had no children, and details of his estate aren't known. AP FACT CHECK: Trump misses on storms, science, clean air

Oct 19, 2018

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump in his interview with The Associated Press said he has "a natural instinct for science." But what he said about hurricanes, clean air and climate doesn't quite get the science right. More than a dozen scientists, economists and climate negotiators pointed out where his comments didn't fit with the reality of human-caused climate change, hurricanes and air pollution. A look at his statements Tuesday: CLIMATE CHANGE TRUMP, when asked about a dire United Nations report this month on climate change that said dangerous warming has already happened and that with each degree, the many harms...

Paul Allen's passions: Rock n' roll, sports and philanthropy

Oct 19, 2018

SEATTLE — Personal computers, conservation, pro football, rock n' roll and rocket ships: Paul G. Allen couldn't have asked for a better way to spend, invest and donate the billions he reaped from co-founding Microsoft with childhood friend Bill Gates. Allen used the fortune he made from Microsoft — whose Windows operating system is found on most of the world's desktop computers — to invest in other ambitions, from tackling climate change and advancing brain research to finding innovative solutions to solve some of the world's biggest challenges. "If it has the potential to do good, then we should do...

Google to charge for apps on Android phones in Europe

Oct 19, 2018

LONDON — Google plans to start charging smartphone makers to pre-install apps like Gmail, YouTube and Google Maps on Android handsets sold in Europe, a response to a record $5 billion antitrust fine imposed by the European Union. The U.S. tech company's announcement Tuesday is a change from its previous business model of letting manufacturers install Google's suite of popular mobile apps for free on phones running its Android operating system. Device makers will also now be able to install rival modified, or "forked," versions of Android, the most widely used mobile operating system. The company is taking the measures...
